Vivian Adu, a past student of the Department of Communication Studies, University of Cape Coast, has been honored with the Best Gender Reporter Award at the 27th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards.
The event, held at the Accra International Conference Centre on October 29, 2023, celebrated the remarkable achievements of journalists across 34 competitive categories.
Adu’s exceptional work in her investigative report titled “Shattered Vows” earned her recognition for delving into the sensitive realm of gender reporting and providing comprehensive statistics on marital breakdowns at the international, regional, and national levels.
The citation read in part, “Reporting on gender is one of the most sensitive beats in journalism, not because there are no facts, but because a slip could expose a reporter to ridicule and criticism. In ‘Shattered Vows,’ you maneuvered in such landmines unscathed, giving detailed statistics at the international, regional, and national levels of breaks in marital vows to the admiration of the Awards Review Committee.”
Vivian expressed her gratitude to the Ghana Journalists Association for the recognition and to the Atinka Media Village for their support. The Ghana Journalists Association, through President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, applauded Adu’s outstanding work in gender reporting and commended her for navigating the challenges of the beat with ease.
The Department of Communication Studies congratulates Vivian Adu on her well-deserved recognition at the 27th GJA Awards. Her success serves as a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication present within the department, encouraging students to pursue impactful reporting and contribute to a more informed and inclusive society.
